Running for Office

The City Clerk's Office has prepared a Candidate Handbook reference for candidates running for City Council.  For a copy of the handbook, please download the Candidate Handbook or contact the City Clerk's office.

Requirements

  • Reside in and be a qualified elector (registered voter) of the district from which nominated and elected, for a period of not less than 30 days prior to the filing of the nomination papers.
  • Reside in the district during term of office. Any member moving from said district during the term shall automatically forfeit office.
  • Not hold any other City office or City employment during the term elected to the Council.
  • Declare under oath to accept the office in the event of election and to support and defend the Constitution of the United States and State of California.

 

State of California Requirements

City Council Members are elected officers identified in Government Code Section 87200 and must file Statements of Economic Interests (Form 700) with City Clerk's Office. Copies of the Statements of Economic interests filed by above-elected officers may be obtained using the City Clerk's online filing system.
