Environmental ComplianceGirl at Drinking Fountain

The Environmental Compliance Division:

  • Protects wastewater treatment plant and its biological processes from interference, pass-through, and contamination
  • Ensures wastewater discharges from industrial users comply with federal regulations

Large industrial dischargers – with 25,000 gallons or more per day of wastewater flow and/or significant total suspended solids and biochemical oxygen demand – are regulated through a Significant Industrial User (SIU) permit system.

Permits and Regulations

Permit violators are subject to fines and penalties, including possible termination of sewer service. Penalty escalations adhere to the Enforcement Response Plan.

  • Environmental Compliance currently maintains approximately 50 SIU permits.

Smaller industrial users are regulated under Special Permits, issued for infrequent discharges or specific process materials.

  • 10 special permits are currently maintained by Environmental Compliance.
  • 16 groundwater discharge permits to control pollutant sources from groundwater remediation sites. Many of these sites are contaminated from prior  leaks from underground fuel tanks.

Truck-hauled wastewater is regulated by both permits and a manifest system, requiring documentation of the source and type of hauled wastewater.
