The Story of the Children's Museum

The Children's Museum is a testament of community in more ways than just what a visitor sees on the 22,000 sq. ft. floor.  It is a testament of mutual support and understanding and of the agony of an entire population wrenched from the pleasures of daily life by the tragedy that killed five young children when a lone gunman opened fire on the Cleveland Elementary School playground in 1989.

Struggling with the senseless loss, and groping for an expression of hope, meaning and love, one of the teachers who was among the wounded 30, Janet Geng, was inspired by the Children's Museum in Washington D.C. Returning to Stockton, she organized the first Board of Directors meeting and together they worked to heal a community.

Today the Board is comprised of 12 community members, who together represent the rich diversity of the San Joaquin Valley.  The Children's Museum is currently under the operation and management of the Children's Museum Board.
